Things to Look For In A Reliable SEO Company

I alwasy wish that my websites rate in top 10 in Google Search Engine Ranking for most of the keywords. I know I am not the only one, everyone who has a website always dreams to get to the top! However I do search engine optimization of my sites myself, that may not be the case for you, you may not have time, or inclination or the skill to do most of the work and thus need to engage a third party to do SEO for your website.

So what are the things you should bear in mind before you pay some $$$ on your marketing and SEO efforts? Here are few of the things that could help you choose between an effective and a waste of time and money SEO company.

First
You must check if a company has successfully completed SEO related projects. Ask for the statistics and data on successful campaigns. This will give you a clue about their capability, potential and their knowledge.

Second
A reliable SEO company will always work according to the right rules of search engine optimization. This is also known as “white-hat" practices of advertising. This is the practice where companies go with right authentic techniques instead of going with spamming and other notorious advertising tricks. Make sure the company explains what are the draw backs with your current site, what is it that they would like to do, and finally how would they do it. You may show up in top 10 in Google for a week, only to regret the decision to select a company that has got you banned in Google forever!

Third
A reliable company will help you through out the project. Consider this like any other business, if I have a rusted car door, if someone is just willing to apply a fresh coat of paint to cover the rust - is just not worth considering. You are looking for a permanent solution, not a 15 days on top of Google effort.

Fourth
No two businesses are the same and that is why there should be different techniques of marketing for different businesses. A reliable SEO company will always deal with your requirements as a unique site with unique challenges and more unique solutions.

Fifth
A number of software tools will automatically generates keywords for your site. A reliable SEO will always perform research based on your industry, target location and target market segment to find out the right keywords for your type of business. Don't just listen to SEO company showing you a list of keywords that can turn your fortunes around just by using a particular keyword all over the place. Keywords used wisely would definitely help, just using keywords in bulk will not!

Text Gets Attention! Not Flash & Images

Effective SEO Is Based On Text

I have often come across Internet users who want a website to be done. They are small startup company, just setting up their shop & store, have no clue about internet traffic, search engines and the likes, but sure they do have a list of what they want:

The most common requirements are

1. Lots of Images
2. Fancy Flash to Attract Potential Buyers
3. Little General Information
4. Good traffic
5. Copy of somesite (sometimes...)
6. Search Engine Optimized
   

I am sure you would say that most of the above requirements are fine. I too agree that these requirements are general requirements of any website, however, I do not like point 1 and 2 in the list at all.
Balthaser.com has been a great site to visit if you want to look at what all you can do in animation and flash. Their core business is to design and create animations and it is perfectly OK to have a site in pure flash, since most of the users visit their site by typing in the URL directly. I don't search for balthaser.com(since 2000) - and those who ever visit the site, remember the name to type it. Thus Balthaser doesn't depend upon search engine, now or in the past. But why would someone who is selling cosmetices or modular kitchen components insist on a flash only site? :) Cuz their friend has suggested that is the only way to go.
If you have such friends, my humble suggestion - please do not pay heed to what your friends say, they no nothing about internet and at times, just to have a wonderful site with 2 -3 visits to site is not what they or you ever anticipated.

Similarly they want a lot many pictures. Avoid text, let pictures convey the message. Haven't you heard that a picture is worth thousand words! I couldn't agree with you less, however, poor search engine doesn't have eyes to decipher the pictures. At the most the name you have for the picture may be registered but a bot doesn't care if your pic contains a nude or a child. Only it's name can get indexed -- Sad isn't it!!!

What most of the time majority fail to understand is that the purpose of any website is to serve humans - not bots, and if you create a site or a blog that caters to humans, trust me, bots would follow and so would your visitors.

We make avoidable SEO errors and end up losing visitor loyalty and revenue earning potential because we didn't get things done as they should be, but because someone suggested this and that, and someone else has done good with pictures and flash. You don't take a pill when your friend does, no reason your site should be like your friends or what is suggested by your friends. Follow your instincts and believe me you would succeed with the right focus and attention.

Everyone wants that their site should rank in first 10 on Google (and yahoo, live etc as well -- predominantly though, search engine effort is made for Google only). Here are some simple steps that you should adopt for your site if you wish to increase your site visibility in search engines.

Assuming I would like to promote my web hosting services, so I have to make sure that I use the keyword "Web Hosting" at most of the places in my site which are valued by search engines.

What are those Key Value Places?
This has oft been said, but here is a small list
1. Page Name
2. Title Tag
3. First Sentence in your text content
4. Images named with keywords
5. Using keyword in ALT tag
6. Good distribution of the keyword in rest of the content

Do you have an example? I know you would like to see this in action as well, so review how it should be done on the site. As I mentioned, I wish to promote my Web Hosting Services and thus the keyword I intend to promote is Web Hosting. So here is how I would create a page as mentioned in Key Value Places.

1. Page Name: Pubwebhost-Web-Hosting-Services.html

2. Title Tag: Web Hosting - For your personal or business use.

3. First Sentence in your text content: Pubwebhost.com offers Free Web Hosting with PHP5 & MySQL5 database

4. Images named with keywords: Pubwebhost-Web-Hosting-logo.jpg

5. Using keyword in ALT tag: Pubwebhost for Free Web Hosting with PHP5 & MySQL5

It's often irritating that despite doing all right things, your website doesn't rank anywhere on search engine. Correction - it does rank, but it is probably on 114th page on Google. We all know that generally users view only first few pages in search engine results and eventually click the link they find most relevant based on Title and description that search engines show for the user.

What can you do, to ensure your efforts on Search Engine Optimization payoff?
1. Title Does Matter
Well, to start with review Title of your web site. Does it contain the keywords? Are the keywords appropriate and likely to attract a search engine user to get tempted enough to click on your link in search engine result?

2. Meta Tags Matter
While little is known about search engine indexing, the fact remains that meta tags still play a role in your sites indexing in search engines. Don't ignore Meta Tags just because you have read somewhere that they don't matter anymore. Truth is - Meta Tags are widely used by search engines and sites (like mediawiki based sites) to capture information about your site.

3. Highlight Keywords
Rather simple rule to follow, ensure you highlight keywords in your content. Why? -- Because when I am looking for some information on the net as I search, I am more likely focused on keywords I used to search, and I am more likely to stay and read your content if your keyword is visible to my eyes a few times on your site. If I don't notice keywords in first glance, clicking on x is the next available option which I prefer to exercise, and i am not the only one utilizing the x option to close the window.

4. Keyword Rich Domain Name
It would depend upon your luck for sure though, so this is not an easy option. Before you start or venture into online business, you increase your chances by selecting a keyword rich domain name. What if you don't get your preferred domain name .com -- don't waste your time searching for only the .com version, internet is full of successful sites which are not .com's and still doing good despite using a .info, .biz and other .extensions. Check if you get your keyword rich domain name . ME, .ASIA .CA etc. Minor TLD's in a domain name provide an attractive option to stay in the lead.

5. Keywords in URL
No longer would you see links such as http://www.example.com/index.php?a=1
&b=2&c=3&d=4 .. what you are most likely to see is http://www.example.com/keywords-matter-a-lot-in-url.html. Another example is of a post where I have advocated using standard URL format, so either all pages are indexed as www.example.com or all are shown up as example.com --> here http://pubdomains.blogspot.com/2008/07/with-or-without-www.html so review your existing hyperlinks and make changes accordingly.


6. ALT Tag
If you disable pictures on your browser, what do you see in place of pictures, is it just a red cross or does it give you text for what the image has to display? Alt Tags are still used by search engines to index your pages and content quality, so ensure you have Alt tags for links, images and everything where it is allowed to be used.

Simple tips I know, but as easy as they appear, its not a surprise that many web sites do not employ these features and not a surprise that the websites do not rank good despite good content.

How to get listed on top in search engines?

Everyone (me included) wants their website to move to the top in search engine ranking. Search Engine Optimization or SEO is the buzzword these days used by those who know, and those who don't know to discuss anything and everything about getting listed in search engines.
We all started our website and blogs and the likes to fulfill some objective or goals. No matter what these objectives are for you, it may be personal, official, financial or business need, we all want our website to show up on top whenever any internet user is searching for something.

So what are the things required to move to the top in search engine rankings? There are loads of softwares and websites selling the tricks of the trade, there are genuine folks out there who analyze your content and modify / restructure what has been written in your web pages and then recommend changes, there are softwares that compare the keyword density in your website vis-a-vi your nearest competitor and give you inputs. These are just a few options that I have listed, in real life there is no end to available options (and advices)

In my experience what I have found (I am not the first one to find this though... it is all there on world wide web :)) in order to move your website to the top you must do the following basic things

a. Generate visitors / Get eyeballs!!!
b. Satisfy eyes to make them stay on your pages for long
c. Convert them into buyers (of your products or services)

Easy !!! Though the steps are easy, to execute them is requires patience, time and perseverance (when it is needed the most)

So how would YOU generate vistors and get the hits to your web pages or your website?
1. Identify a suitable place for your target audience.
If I want to sell boats, I should not do so in a desert, unless my boat is named CAMEL. There is old adage, birds of same feather flock together - and I totally agree, so should you!!! I don't want you to agree because I ask you to, but because that is common sense. If you want to sell one kind of service, you should do so where there is already a ready audience available. It makes your task rather easy when you enter a room and you know that everyone in that room is looking for the same thing that you are selling. Imagine going to a mall and you don't know who needs what and you would have to spend hours to even connect with one person who is really keen on stuff that you provide. So - use search engine, locate a forum / community / place where people gather and discuss things that you provide.

2. Go ahead and create a name for self
We all like to know from others what they feel about something. Free advice - though is not valued, but it does allow you to create a name for your self. Start responding to questions (genuinely), give your suggestions or feedback. It is not difficult to review a website for someone who has asked users to review his / her website? Go ahead, give him your view point and not only would you get a thank you, search engines would also register you and the conversation, should any keyword catch search engines attention!!!

3. Start talking about your domain / service / site that you wish to promote.
Create your own thread in forums or communities and allow others to come to your post and give you inputs, discuss issues that you need addressed. Start a web log where you may write informative articles and post your views for the world (and search engines) to pick up.

4. Give links in your discussions that point to your website.
I often create web pages for simple how to whenever I find that I can't do justice to the query in rather restricted forum features. Then I simply point a link to my webpage where user gets to see details on HOWTo do something from the forum and they find more things out there!!! Even after 6 months, people from forums come to my site to fix their os-commerce bug which got introduce due to MySQQL5 upgrade and this page often gets more hits than my website home page!! Incidentally only one link was posted in oscommerce forum, but it has served its purpose well.

5. Invite others to review your website / content.
Ask others to do what you think would help your site to get some traffic, and some good advice. Even a color theme may make a difference to the overall look and feel. Also when you create something, I know it looks oh so beautiful, however you are often blind to things that others may see and let you know. So please, do get feedback and reviews from others and act on them if you are convinced that the person who commented has provided valuable inputs and is not there just to promote his viagra brand medicine using links in his post.

6. Include link to your website in your signature.
Each response you give on any website, if allowed, put a link to your site. This helps search engines to associate keywords on a page with the available links and you never know when someone would like to know more about you and go to your website because you have made a post / comment which they like. Similarly your email must carry a link in your signature to create a brand for your website.


Satisfy eyes to make them stay on your pages for long? Is that possible?
Recent studies indicate that most of the web-surfers close or move away from the site just based on presentation and amount of advertisements on a page, or the time it takes for a website to load. I have seen websites that have good information, however there is an overkill and 3 google ads really don't help to make it dear to me. You want to read something, and the pop-up makes an entry just as were about to read the first line!!! So you close the advertisement, and I don't know about you, but I generally close the site as well. Make money with the ads, but please when I am looking for information, I don't want to be reminded that I can earn $$$$ or win a car or I am the lucky 9999999th visitor to the site that entitles me to do whatever I wish to do. I generally close the windows. I am sure you would do the same if you get 5 ads for each sentence on a page. If you wish to promote your site, initially DO NOT populate the website with advertisements. Fill the site with relevant content, information that is crisp and short and it should all be wrapped in a pleasing format. Use colors that are friendly to eyes, an overall structure that is easy to navigate and content that is easy to understand and available in shortest clicks. Trust me, you would get opportunity to make money using ads and banners and adwords. However when you are building your website, you should not wrap content around ads.

If you have done the first bit to get good amount of eyeballs to your site and second bit to retain them on your site for a considerable length of time, next stage is to convert regular visitors into buyers (of your products or services). You have freedom to place ads, and start negotiating with companies that would like to advertise on your website. You have the hits to show how frequently folks flock to your site and now you can start doing what you would like your website to do. Incidentally by the time you reach here, you would also notice that search engines would rank you better. Increase in hits is a genuine indication that your website has been listed in search results, and you can run a counter and use analytics to identify where does the traffic come from, and what needs your attention to sustain the hits / traffic to your website.

I am fully aware that information provided here has been on the internet for ages, but often we miss out on basics for creating a decent site and generate traffic on our own before search engines start to rate us and point to our site. Until we can get good eyeballs, search engines won't!!!
