What to look for in Paid Web Hosting

For selecting a paid web host you need to consider points mentioned below to ensure you get the best deal and don't repent after a month or two of great service followed by unreachable support.

a. Reliability -- Are they skilled at doing what they claim to do? Do they have any testimonial to share? Do they have good infrastructure, bandwidth and quality material deployed, or is the server running in a basement?

b. Space and Bandwidth offered -- Though you may get a lucrative offer of 5GB for $3, you may end up paying $15 for bandwidth, so you have to make sure you get clear idea of what space and bandwidth is offered.

c. Network Uptime -- While most of the hosts claim uninterrupted service, they often fail to deliver the advertised uptime.

d. Support -- While it is impossible to forecast call volume (which leads to variation of hold time) - does the company seriously provide tel support which is responsive and intelligent?

e. Contract Duration -- Does the company force you for year long contract or you have a choice for monthly / quarterly billing?

It was mentioned somewhere that you should purchase domain name from a different source and web hosting from another - well, it is not true that company you buy hosting service from becomes owner of the domain all the time. Decent service providers register the domains in your name and you may verify the same on whois search (if you wish to have a public registration) For a small fees, service providers allow you private registration (to avoid spam or to prevent unwanted information about your contact details floating on the net or available to all the netizens.

Have a thought or input to share with me, please do post your feedback / comment!!

Cheers

Where are all good Domain Names gone?

Often when your creative juices flow and you get the grand idea for a domain name that is just right for you, your organization or anything that you intend to do ... and you want to buy it for yourself, you often end up doing a search only to find that someone has already bought it. Not only did that someone buy it before you, they did it long long back, when you didn't think you would host a website, or even register a domain name. It is frustrating, I know so what are the choices when you don't get a domain name of your choice?

A. Check if domain name which you want to buy is available for selling by its existing owner. There are many people who register domains only to sell it back at a premium. They invest their money with the view that someone would be interested to pay extra to get the domain name from them.

B. If domain is parked with SEDO or GoDaddy for sale - you can bid for the domain name. This is open auction, and entirely dependent upon the top bidding.

C. Check forums for domain sellers - DNForum is one place where folks auction the domains in their possession. There are many forums where the transaction is directly between seller and buyer. Word of caution though, you may get duped (pay and never receive your domain name because the seller never owned the domain)

D. If the cost of buying from options above is prohibitive, explore other options!!!

I would continue on what these options can be in next post. For now, if you have identified a name that should go with your hobby, goal, business or whatever and if you want to buy that domain name, check if it is available. If it is not available, check the web site and see if it is a parked page or is there a valid portal / content. Based on your research if you feel owner would be willing to sell, contact them (will cover how to find the owner later). If the domain is parked, you may have to enter bidding or outright purchase from brokers like Sedo.com who would assist you in buying a domain available with sellers.

Reflections... 2007

Last day of 2007, and I must admit, I haven't really done justice to blogging. I intended to use this blog to share my views on everything I felt I had to discuss and share... but then, things don't happen the way you want them to happen!
A quick review of what each month brought in my life
January 2007 - It was supposed to be a memorable occasion with couple of siblings getting married and starting new life graduating from bachelorhood and earning the degree on marital bliss. It turned out to be tragic month though, one that I would remember forever for the personal loss it brought in my life. I lost my father after a prolonged illness, and thus was one of the worst time of my life...

February 2007 - Started picking the threads, how does world change around you, when suddenly you don't have your mentor around you, and you have to act as the head of the family!!! Life has never been same again, the luxury of taking risks, the freedom to do things since you know you had an elder at home to take care of everything, you saw them making decisions all your life, and now you are on the cross road to really think about everything ... Wasn't expected, but that is how you suddenly wake up one day to find that you are now the elder...

March 2007 - Continuation of bad run... The company I am employed in allows our rivals to buy us out... No immediate threats, but uncertainty all around. Folks in office are gloomy.

April 2007 - We have been sold... This is the 3rd time I have to go through acquisition.

May 2007 - Deal Sealed. Some exodus, some firing, some blood bath. This place would never be the same again.

June 2007 - Time to unlearn what ever had been acquired over the period of time. Our work culture was different, our philosophy was different... We Were Different folks, small in size, but efficient and excellent. Time for us to get used to new masters, old master has been asked to vacate the seat... not a pleasant time to be in, watching your mentor pack bags and bid adieu, and thanks to acquisition, you have to switch your loyalty to the new leaders. Do i have a choice... not at this stage, but I have already started searching for my resume stored somewhere on my hard drive. I may need it anytime now...

July 2007 - Uneventful month. Just the same cycle of unlearning - re learning.

August 2007 - O my god, what have you put me in... I am on the verge of saying sayonara... I have had enough of new management style. I no longer have any authority, control or the domain that I was hired for... alternative strategy saw birth of my web hosting and domain hosting services. Sooner or later I would get in this field as a full time entrepreneur. At least I have started domain name registration and web hosting service under the name of pubdomains.com - a shortened form of public domains. It's worth a risk...

September 2007 - Office is quiet, and so am I. Do not want to draw any unwanted attention, bidding my time, since the time is not right. I studied internet marketing strategies for promoting my business of domain registration in my free time... search engine rankings are no where even in bottom 100 :( . And this is when pubwebhost.com takes birth - for free hosting services, a minor expense of $10 and I am free web hosting service provider!!!

October 2007 - Can't take it no more. I belong to old school, I am old fashioned, and I dearly loved the company before it got acquired. Conflicts have started to show up, and I am desperate break free. It's a matter of time before I loose self control and put down my papers. I still need the regular income, domain registration is picking up, added .in domain registration services with pubdomains.in coming to life to cater to indian market. Also an excellent extension for getting catchy domains!!!

November 2007 - Time for a vacation. Need to review where I am headed for, I know I am being stripped off my responsibilities one by one and it wouldn't be a surprise if I get the pink slip ... all ominous signals from all quarters. Time to talk.

December 2007 - It's time to say goodbye... goodbye to 2007, goodbye to this company, and goodbye to this city. I chose to start afresh, and I am glad I am doing this. I don't know what is in store for 2008, but I am confident, I can make it better than 2007. Move back to my own city, my own house, and focus on my business now... Watch out internet, I am going to charge full steam ahead.

I take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy, healthy and prosperous 2008.

Back to Business

For all internet freaks - one thing stands out clear for any company is getting a good Domain Name. With over 600 million strong internet users and counting - the demand to get online is increasing everyday!!!!
How can you as an individual join this movement and make money everyday?
Suppose you are a freelancer who
a. Develops sites for others. &
b. Host or manage Sites for others or
c. Develop and maintain your own website(s).
Now questions
Where do you buy domain name?
Where do you host them?
What do you get - if you do it from public service providers?
Do you get commision from them?
Answers
If you & your friends develop and host sites regularly - you should become a reseller!!!
How does it work?
For every domain that is registered on YOUR Domain Registration Site - You get attractive commisions. For every hosting package sold - You share the profits. Why is it good, because - You are the buyer (for someone) and You are the seller !!! so a win win for any and every activity that is related to domain hosting and registration services.
How much does it cost?
Well - GDaddy is worlds largest reseller with plans that start from $99 (Approx INR 4100) that go upto $239 (Approx INR 10000 at current conversion rates) www.pubdomainshost.com offers same services that are available for $80 (INR 3200) to $179 (INR 7200) .
What do you gain?
Well with a single hosting plan and domain name registration - you can make cool commisions from sites hosted on your (reseller) servers.
Support
pubdomainshost.com creates your virtual store - so not only you, but anyone on the internet can come and register or buy from you - do a bit of marketing and get the orders from all over the globe!! They offer 24x7 support to your customers as part of the package, and help your customers to succeed!!! Who would give you these services for price as low as $80!!!
Reseller Fees
Trust me, with a small expenditure of 80 USD on pubdomainshost.com - I have already recovered my investment from a site that I recently created through Rent a Coder. Not only did my customer pay for creating his site for about 150 USD, he hosted it through my site and I got back all my money that I invested. September onwards - any sale I make would be my profits :) Ain't it amazing that I have customers whom I have never seen in my life!!! They come, they buy from my site, and I make profits selling stuff without negotiations, office or even any conversation. It can't get simple than that.
Competition
There are many players in the market so it is natural to think about your chances of success - but on a serious thought, there are so many sellers because there are many more buyers!!!! This is an ever growing space, with names coming up with .mobi, .tv, .ws extensions - everyone has an opportunity to own their own domain name or get online and have a site. Sooner or later - you would be doing it for your company, family, friends or yourself. Why do it at some other place, why don't you do it on your own site and be in a Win Win Situation.
Grab this opportunity to take your share of Internet revolution and be a webmaster - and service provider.

Good luck Friends!!!

The first step

It was an exciting Monday (unlike monday blues... for a change hehe!!)
I had to rush to another city (which took about 45 mins flight time, and 2 hours waiting at airport - enough to read complete manual on HowTo be a reseller, and be your own boss)

Sometimes when you move away from your daily activities, not seeing familiar faces, or doing regular work that you are - oh so used to do, the world changes (or the way I look at world, I notice a change).

Anyways, to cut long story short - I travelled, had ample time to read instructions on refining my approach to my business, and more time to ponder how to use the power of world wide web to reach out to fellow humans who want to have thier own presence in IT. Sooner or later, all of us would google for everything, we would all have our own websites, and our own domains. So while their are big fella's out there who are providing services to millions of internet users, and offer wonderful offers to host their web sites, or register domains, provide SSL certificates to make your site content secure and authentic etcetera, so what am I doing in all this?

You guessed it right, big fellas are doing it, because there is a market for it. And I have become just another provider of these services to anyone and everyone. I am providing everyone option to register their share of web space with me, and we all are happy with the deal. You get your space, I get my share of taking WWW to all corners of the globe (and some day perhaps on galactic frontiers too - If I live that long to see that happen sigh.. )
